The biggest challenge facing our senior population is cognitive impairment. Cognitive impairment is more that a senior moment. It is some level of memory loss which could be either short term or long term memory eventually leading to Dementia.
We at Loving Care Living realized early in our beginning that memory care provided the biggest need for our seniors. Early on we began creating company culture that was built around compassion and understanding and patience when caring for Dementia residents.
Our staff training extensive. Each staff member is educated and trained to handle the challenges of memory care from inconsistent eating habits and sleep patterns to managing stimulation. Our memory care is built around managing the frustration from a sense of loss of control. A sense that there is a loss of control is the biggest single factor leading to acting out or combativeness. The feeling that they are no longer making any decisions leads to depression and a failure to thrive.
Our care plans are managed around resident participation in decision making of daily living We strive not to enable but rather encourage the resident to do as much as they can. This participation in even the smallest way creates a sense of independence. Allowing them to be part of the decision making, however small it maybe is very important.
Our approach is to get each resident involve in daily living, some simple tasks such as folding towels, setting dinner table, picking out wardrobe etc. Our expertise has been developed over years of caring and nurturing. Making sure seniors to stay engaged in life, to create an atmosphere of hope and self worth.
